Personal Biography
Tony Field was born in Nottingham and began his interest in art after winning an art competition at the age of 4. Passing a 13+ exam, he went to Nottingham Art School studying for a year and a half until his family moved to Ealing, West London. Finishing his secondary education he applied and gained a place at Ealing Art School were an experiment in art education was being attempted. It was run by Roy Ascot and his Ground Course which attracted many important lecturers and practioners such as R B Kitaj, the Cowen brothers and action painter Dennis Bowen. Also many notable students such as Freddie Mercury and Pete Townsend of the Who, who were in the same 1962 class as Tony.
The untimely death of his father obliged Tony to leave Art school and for the next couple of years did various jobs. Finally taking a position as draughtsman, with a construction company. Tony married at 21 to Josephine and subsequently had 4 children. As his career developed he began working as a Soils Engineer on sites throughout the UK and in the North Sea; carrying out pipeline surveys from the back of a ship. Finally, finishing his construction career, as a foreman on the Thames Barrier site. During this period Tony continued to produce art work mainly painting and drawing, taking two sabbaticals, one of 6 months and one of 18 months where he continued to practice art.
At the beginning of the second period he and his family moved to Lincolnshire and opened a small art gallery and at the end of this period he joined a large horticulture nursery, as a maintenance manager where he stayed for 9 years, but gradually his calling to produce art became stronger and after a year part time study at Lincoln, support from his wife gave him the opportunity to return to full time study. Completing a Foundation Course at Lincoln and moving to De Montfort University where he completed a BA with Honors in Fine Art in 1997.
Since then he has exhibited throughout the UK in public spaces and galleries.
For over 14 years Tony has run very successful workshops and sculpture projects with thousands of children in numerous schools and other venues, covering a wide range of skill and media types.

Artist's Statement
Although in general my work is figurative there is an element of free expression which sometimes borders on the abstract. At some point the work takes on a life of its own and attempts to take control, it is this relationship between the two living elements the artist and the art work that produce a successful piece of art”. The fundamentals of the creative spirit lie at the very heart of all invention in all walks of life
Art should always be stimulating, inspiring, provocative, involving, funny, exciting, annoying, beautiful, ugly………….but not necessarily all at the same time……
